Where you stay in Alleppey (Alappuzha) shapes your whole trip. Some areas put you next to the bus stand and the beach. Others give you the backwaters from your window, and a night so quiet you can hear fish jump. We run a homestay on an island on Vembanad Lake, so yes, we are biased, and we will say so. But we also send guests elsewhere when another area suits them better. This guide covers every option, who it suits, and how to choose.
| Area | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alleppey town | Short stays, trains and buses | Convenient, lots of places to eat, cheap autos | Busy and noisy. No backwater views. |
| Alappuzha Beach | Sunsets, the pier, evening walks | Close to town, lively evenings | Crowded at weekends. The backwaters are a drive away. |
| Punnamada and the Finishing Point | Backwater views, houseboats, the Nehru Trophy race | Right on Vembanad Lake, and houseboats leave from here | The main road side can be busy. |
| Lake islands | Quiet, nature, couples and families | No road noise, village life, water all around | Reached by boat, so plan your arrival with your hosts. |
| Kuttanad villages | Paddy fields and rural Kerala | Beautiful, very local | Spread out, so you need transport for most things. |
| Marari Beach | A quieter beach holiday | Clean beach, fishing village feel | Away from the backwaters and town. |
| Kumarakom | Resort holidays, birdwatching | Polished lakeside resorts, bird sanctuary | Mostly higher prices, and less to do outside the resort. |
| Houseboat | One night on the water | A unique experience, meals on board | Small rooms, and the boat moors for the night. |
Town is practical. The KSRTC bus stand and the boat jetty are central, the railway station is close by, and the beach is a short auto-rickshaw ride away. There are restaurants, cafes, banks and shops within walking distance. If you arrive on a late train or leave on an early bus, a town hotel saves you stress.
What you give up is the reason most people come to Alleppey: the water. Town hotels look onto roads, not backwaters. Most travellers spend one night in town at most, then move to the lake.
The beach is good for evening walks and sunsets beside the old pier, and it is lively with local families at weekends. Hotels and homestays near the beach suit people who want both town and sea. The backwaters are a short drive away, so a canoe or shikara trip still fits easily into your day.
This is the Alleppey you have seen in photos: coconut palms leaning over the water, canoes, houseboats drifting past, egrets in the paddy fields. Punnamada Lake, part of Vembanad, is where the houseboats set off and where the Nehru Trophy boat race is held. Staying here puts you in the middle of it.
Along the backwaters you can choose between resorts, with pools, restaurants and more services, and homestays, with a family, home-cooked Kerala food and a slower pace. See our backwater homestay in Alleppey for what a homestay day looks like.
Several small islands sit in Vembanad Lake just off Alleppey. Evaan’s Casa is on one of them, at Punnamada near Cheguvera Boat Ferry. There is no road, so we pick you up by boat. The trade-off is simple: a little less convenience, a lot more peace.
A typical day with us: sunrise over the paddy fields behind the house, breakfast, a free canoe ride through the village canals, a walk on the footpath that circles the island, fishing or cycling in the afternoon, and sunset over the lake in front. We can arrange shikara rides, kayaking, houseboat trips, an Ayurveda massage, and cabs for sightseeing.
An island suits you if you want rest, nature and village life, you are travelling as a couple or family, and you are happy to plan your arrival and departure times with your hosts.
It is not for you if you want nightlife, need to go in and out of town several times a day, or would rather not step on a boat.
South and east of Alleppey, Kuttanad is Kerala’s rice bowl, where paddy is farmed below sea level behind earth embankments. Staying out here is deeply rural and very beautiful, but distances are longer and you will depend on transport. Many visitors stay near Punnamada instead and explore Kuttanad by boat. See our Kuttanad page.
North of town, Marari is a quieter beach with fishing boats and coconut groves, and mostly resorts and beach homestays. It suits a beach-first holiday. Many visitors split their stay: a couple of nights at Marari, and a night or two on the backwaters.
Kumarakom is on the far shore of Vembanad Lake, in Kottayam district. It is known for upmarket lakeside resorts and its bird sanctuary. Choose it for a resort holiday where you barely leave the property. For more choice and better value, most people pick Alleppey. We compare them in Alleppey or Kumarakom.
A night on a houseboat is memorable: meals cooked on board, the lake at sunset, fishermen at dawn. But the rooms are compact, boats moor for the night, and prices vary a lot. Many travellers do one night on a houseboat and one or two nights on land. See homestay vs houseboat and our homestay + houseboat combo.
| Type | What you get | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Homestay | A room in a family home, home-cooked food, local advice | Budget travellers, families, anyone who wants a local experience |
| Resort | Pool, restaurant, spa and more services | Resort holidays, special occasions |
| Town hotel | Convenience and simple rooms | Short stops, early departures |
| Houseboat | A night on the water with meals | One special night |
Stay on the water. Two nights at Punnamada or on a lake island lets you see the backwaters properly, with town and the beach close by. See how many days are enough for Alleppey.
With children, space and simplicity matter more than luxury: a larger room or a room for four, food the kids will eat, and things to do that don’t need a car. Our family homestay has a 320 sq ft Premium Lakeview room, a twin room for four, and free canoeing, fishing and cycling.
Quiet and a view matter most. A lake island or a Kumarakom resort works best. Add a canoe at sunset and a shikara through the canals. See our couple stay and honeymoon page.
Homestays give the best value in Alleppey: a clean room, breakfast and local knowledge for less than many town hotels. Our paddy view AC room is ₹1,900 a night for two, with breakfast. See budget homestay in Alleppey and our Alleppey trip cost guide.
Look for a place with several rooms together and a common area, so you can eat and relax as a group. A homestay you can mostly fill yourselves is ideal.
The race is held on Punnamada Lake, usually in August. Stay as close to Punnamada as you can, and book early, because race week fills up fast. See Nehru Trophy boat race stay.
From June to September Alleppey is at its greenest, and it is a traditional season for Ayurveda. Choose a stay with a covered sit-out or balcony, so you can enjoy the rain on the lake. See best time to visit Alleppey.
| Trip | Suggested split |
|---|---|
| 2 nights | Both nights on the lake: a lake island or Punnamada |
| 3 nights | 2 nights on the lake, then 1 night on a houseboat or at the beach |
| 4 nights | 2 nights on the lake, 1 houseboat night, 1 night at Marari Beach |
| Late train arrival | 1 night in town, then move to the lake the next morning |
For most first-time visitors, the backwaters around Punnamada or a lake island is the best area. You get the views and the canoe rides the trip is about, and town is still close by boat and road.
The backwaters, for most people. Town is only better for a single night before an early train or bus.
Many people do both: one night on a houseboat and one or two nights on land. A homestay gives you more space, better sleep and time to explore, and a houseboat gives you a night on the water.
At a lakeside homestay or resort with a larger room, simple food and activities like canoeing and fishing. See our family homestay.
On a lake island or in Kumarakom, for quiet and views. See our couple stay page.
Two nights is the sweet spot for most travellers. See how many days are enough for Alleppey.
Yes. The backwaters are a short drive or boat ride from town, so you can stay in town and take a canoe or shikara trip during the day.
