The best time to visit Alleppey is November to February, when it is dry and pleasant and the backwaters are at their most comfortable. But every season has something, and the monsoon in particular has a lot going for it. Here is what to expect through the year, month by month, from people who live on the lake.
| Months | Weather | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| November – February | Dry, pleasant, cooler nights | Houseboats, canoeing, sightseeing | Peak prices and crowds, especially late December |
| March – May | Hot and humid | Lower prices, quiet backwaters | Midday heat. Plan outings early and late. |
| June – September | Monsoon rain, very green | Lush scenery, Ayurveda, lower prices, boat races | Heavy showers. Some outings depend on the weather. |
| October | Rain easing | Green landscapes, fewer tourists | Occasional showers |
Dry, sunny and comfortable, with cool mornings. It is one of the best months for the backwaters, and one of the busiest, especially early in the month. Book ahead.
Still dry and pleasant, with the crowds thinning after mid-month. A sweet spot for weather and value.
Warming up and getting humid. Mornings and evenings are lovely, and prices start to ease.
Hot and humid. Plan canoe rides and walks for early morning and late afternoon, and rest in the heat of the day. Pre-monsoon showers can bring welcome relief.
The hottest and stickiest month, with pre-monsoon storms arriving late in the month. It is quiet, and good value if you don’t mind the heat.
The monsoon arrives. The rain is heavy but often comes in bursts, and the landscape turns brilliant green. This is the traditional start of the Ayurveda season.
Full monsoon. The paddy fields and canals look wonderful, and snake boat race season is beginning in the villages. Pack rain gear and leave some flexibility.
The highlight of the monsoon: the Nehru Trophy boat race is held on Punnamada Lake, usually in August, and Onam, Kerala’s harvest festival, often falls in August or September. Race week books up early. See our Nehru Trophy boat race stay page.
The rain begins to ease, it is still very green, and the festival mood often continues. Good value before the season starts.
A lovely in-between month. There are fewer tourists, fresh green scenery, and occasional showers.
The dry season returns and the backwaters are at their best. It gets busier towards the end of the month.
Peak season. The weather is beautiful, and Christmas and New Year bring festive crowds and the highest prices. Book well ahead.
| Event | When | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Snake boat races in the villages | Monsoon months | Local races, including at Champakulam |
| Nehru Trophy boat race | Usually August | The biggest snake boat race, on Punnamada Lake |
| Onam | August or September | Kerala’s harvest festival, with feasts, flowers and celebrations |
| Christmas and New Year | December – January | Festive, busy and at peak prices |
Dates change each year, so always check the official dates before you book.
