Alleppey Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for 2026

Alleppey Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for 2026

Last updated: September 2026

How much does a trip to Alleppey cost? It depends mostly on two things: where you sleep, and whether you book a houseboat. Everything else, like food, boats and local transport, is fairly affordable. This guide breaks down every cost, shows what drives each price up or down, and gives worked budgets you can adapt.

A note on prices: our own room rates below are exact. For things we don’t sell ourselves, such as houseboats, taxis and restaurant meals, we explain what affects the price instead of quoting numbers that change with the season. Always check current prices before you book.

Where the money goes

CostHow big a shareWhat drives it
AccommodationUsually the largestType of stay, room size and view, and the season
Houseboat (optional)Can be the largest single itemBoat size, private or shared, AC hours, meals, and the season
Boats and activitiesSmall to mediumCanoe, shikara or kayak, how many hours, private or shared
FoodSmall to mediumLocal restaurants vs hotels, and whether breakfast is included

1. Accommodation

Here are our own rates at Evaan’s Casa, per room per night, breakfast included:

RoomSizeViewPrice per night
Paddy View AC Room100 sq ftPaddy fields₹1,900
Standard Paddy View AC Room130 sq ftPaddy fields and the lake₹2,200
Delux Lakeview rooms200–220 sq ftLake₹2,900
Premium Lakeview AC Room320 sq ftLake₹3,600
Twin Bedded Room (up to 4 guests)280 sq ftPaddy fields and the lake₹5,500

An extra person in a lakeview room is ₹900. Every room includes breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and a free canoe ride on arrival. Village walks, fishing and cycling are also free.

How other options compare: town hotels range from basic to mid-range. Backwater resorts usually cost considerably more than homestays, and more again in Kumarakom. Prices everywhere rise from December to January, over long weekends, and during Nehru Trophy race week.

2. Houseboats

A houseboat is the biggest optional cost, and prices vary more than anything else in Alleppey. What changes the price:

  • Private or shared. Private overnight boats cost the most. Shared boats and day cruises are cheaper.
  • Number of bedrooms. One-bedroom boats are the cheapest private option.
  • Day cruise or overnight. A few hours on the lake costs far less than a night on board.
  • AC hours. Many houseboats run the air conditioning only at night, so ask exactly when it is on.
  • Meals. Check whether lunch, dinner and breakfast are all included.
  • The season. December to January is the most expensive, and the monsoon the cheapest.

Before you pay, ask: What time is check-in and check-out? Which meals are included? What are the AC hours? Is the boat private? Are there extra charges for pickup, or for festival dates?

If you stay with us, we can get you a current houseboat quote, or arrange a day cruise instead. See our homestay + houseboat combo and homestay vs houseboat.

3. Boats and activities

Public ferry—State Water Transport ferries are the cheapest way onto the lake, with very low fares

4. Food

Kerala food is good value in Alleppey. A full Kerala rice meal with curries in a local restaurant costs much less than a hotel buffet, and seafood like karimeen (pearl spot) costs more than a vegetarian meal. Breakfast is included with every room at our homestay, and our meals are served in the common dining area.

Keep food costs down: eat where the locals eat, try the lunchtime meals, and choose a stay that includes breakfast.

5. Getting there and around

  • Train: Alappuzha station is on the coastal line, and it is the cheapest way to arrive.
  • Bus: KSRTC buses link Alleppey with Kochi, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram at low fares.
  • Taxi from Kochi airport: the most comfortable option and the most expensive. We can arrange a cab.
  • Auto-rickshaws: cheap for short trips around town. Agree the fare first, or ask for the meter.
  • A cab for sightseeing: worth it for Kuttanad, temples or Marari Beach in one day.

Costs people forget

  • Extra person charges, for a third guest in a room.
  • Taxes: check whether the price includes GST.
  • Peak-date surcharges at Christmas, New Year and race week.
  • Boat transfers to places reached by water. These are included when you stay with us.
  • Tips for houseboat crews and boatmen, if you are happy with the service.
  • Entry tickets for palaces, museums and the bird sanctuary.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 2-day Alleppey trip cost?

For two people staying two nights at our homestay, the room is ₹3,800 to ₹7,200 with breakfast. Food, boats and transport come on top, and a houseboat adds the most.

Is Alleppey expensive?

Not necessarily. Homestays, local food, public ferries and canoes are affordable. Houseboats and resorts are what push the cost up.

Is a houseboat worth the money?

For one night, many people think so. But you can enjoy the backwaters well without one: see homestay vs houseboat.

What is the cheapest way to see the backwaters?

A canoe ride through the village canals, or the public ferry across the lake. Canoe rides are free for our guests on arrival.

When is Alleppey cheapest?

Usually during the monsoon, June to September, apart from the Nehru Trophy race week in August.

How much does a family trip to Alleppey cost?

Our Twin Bedded Room for four is ₹5,500 a night with breakfast, and many activities are free. Add food, a boat trip and transport.

Do I need to book in advance?

For December–January and race week, yes, well in advance. At other times a few days’ notice is usually enough, but check first.
