Where to Stay in Alleppey: Town, Beach, Backwaters or Island?

Where to Stay in Alleppey: Town, Beach, Backwaters or Island?

Last updated: September 2026

Where you stay in Alleppey (Alappuzha) shapes your whole trip. Some areas put you next to the bus stand and the beach. Others give you the backwaters from your window, and a night so quiet you can hear fish jump. We run a homestay on an island on Vembanad Lake, so yes, we are biased, and we will say so. But we also send guests elsewhere when another area suits them better. This guide covers every option, who it suits, and how to choose.

The short answer

  • First visit, and you want the backwaters: stay on the lake side, around Punnamada or on one of the lake islands.
  • One night, arriving late or leaving early: stay in Alleppey town, near the bus stand or the railway station.
  • Beach holiday: stay near Alappuzha Beach, or at Marari Beach, north of town.
  • Families: a lakeside homestay with a larger room, simple food and free activities.
  • Couples and honeymooners: a lake island, or a resort in Kumarakom.
  • Budget: a homestay. Clean AC rooms with breakfast start under ₹2,000 a night.
  • One night on the water: a houseboat, ideally combined with a night or two on land.

Five questions to decide where to stay

  1. How many nights? For one night, convenience matters most. For two or more, it is worth staying somewhere special on the water.
  2. Who is travelling? Families need space and easy food. Couples usually want quiet. Groups of friends need more than one room close together.
  3. What do you want to do? Backwaters and village life point to the lake. Beaches and cafes point to town and the coast.
  4. How are you arriving? Train and bus arrivals are easiest from town. With a car or a pickup arranged, the lake and the islands are easy too.
  5. What is your budget? Homestays give the best value, resorts cost the most, and houseboats sit in between but vary widely.

Alleppey town

Town is practical. The KSRTC bus stand and the boat jetty are central, the railway station is close by, and the beach is a short auto-rickshaw ride away. There are restaurants, cafes, banks and shops within walking distance. If you arrive on a late train or leave on an early bus, a town hotel saves you stress.

What you give up is the reason most people come to Alleppey: the water. Town hotels look onto roads, not backwaters. Most travellers spend one night in town at most, then move to the lake.

Alappuzha Beach

The beach is good for evening walks and sunsets beside the old pier, and it is lively with local families at weekends. Hotels and homestays near the beach suit people who want both town and sea. The backwaters are a short drive away, so a canoe or shikara trip still fits easily into your day.

Punnamada and the backwaters

This is the Alleppey you have seen in photos: coconut palms leaning over the water, canoes, houseboats drifting past, egrets in the paddy fields. Punnamada Lake, part of Vembanad, is where the houseboats set off and where the Nehru Trophy boat race is held. Staying here puts you in the middle of it.

Along the backwaters you can choose between resorts, with pools, restaurants and more services, and homestays, with a family, home-cooked Kerala food and a slower pace. See our backwater homestay in Alleppey for what a homestay day looks like.

The lake islands

Several small islands sit in Vembanad Lake just off Alleppey. Evaan’s Casa is on one of them, at Punnamada near Cheguvera Boat Ferry. There is no road, so we pick you up by boat. The trade-off is simple: a little less convenience, a lot more peace.

A typical day with us: sunrise over the paddy fields behind the house, breakfast, a free canoe ride through the village canals, a walk on the footpath that circles the island, fishing or cycling in the afternoon, and sunset over the lake in front. We can arrange shikara rides, kayaking, houseboat trips, an Ayurveda massage, and cabs for sightseeing.

An island suits you if you want rest, nature and village life, you are travelling as a couple or family, and you are happy to plan your arrival and departure times with your hosts.

It is not for you if you want nightlife, need to go in and out of town several times a day, or would rather not step on a boat.

Kuttanad and the villages

South and east of Alleppey, Kuttanad is Kerala’s rice bowl, where paddy is farmed below sea level behind earth embankments. Staying out here is deeply rural and very beautiful, but distances are longer and you will depend on transport. Many visitors stay near Punnamada instead and explore Kuttanad by boat. See our Kuttanad page.

Marari Beach

North of town, Marari is a quieter beach with fishing boats and coconut groves, and mostly resorts and beach homestays. It suits a beach-first holiday. Many visitors split their stay: a couple of nights at Marari, and a night or two on the backwaters.

Kumarakom

Kumarakom is on the far shore of Vembanad Lake, in Kottayam district. It is known for upmarket lakeside resorts and its bird sanctuary. Choose it for a resort holiday where you barely leave the property. For more choice and better value, most people pick Alleppey. We compare them in Alleppey or Kumarakom.

A houseboat

A night on a houseboat is memorable: meals cooked on board, the lake at sunset, fishermen at dawn. But the rooms are compact, boats moor for the night, and prices vary a lot. Many travellers do one night on a houseboat and one or two nights on land. See homestay vs houseboat and our homestay + houseboat combo.

Where to stay for…

First-time visitors

Stay on the water. Two nights at Punnamada or on a lake island lets you see the backwaters properly, with town and the beach close by. See how many days are enough for Alleppey.

Families

With children, space and simplicity matter more than luxury: a larger room or a room for four, food the kids will eat, and things to do that don’t need a car. Our family homestay has a 320 sq ft Premium Lakeview room, a twin room for four, and free canoeing, fishing and cycling.

Couples and honeymooners

Quiet and a view matter most. A lake island or a Kumarakom resort works best. Add a canoe at sunset and a shikara through the canals. See our couple stay and honeymoon page.

Travellers on a budget

Homestays give the best value in Alleppey: a clean room, breakfast and local knowledge for less than many town hotels. Our paddy view AC room is ₹1,900 a night for two, with breakfast. See budget homestay in Alleppey and our Alleppey trip cost guide.

Groups of friends

Look for a place with several rooms together and a common area, so you can eat and relax as a group. A homestay you can mostly fill yourselves is ideal.

The Nehru Trophy boat race

The race is held on Punnamada Lake, usually in August. Stay as close to Punnamada as you can, and book early, because race week fills up fast. See Nehru Trophy boat race stay.

The monsoon

From June to September Alleppey is at its greenest, and it is a traditional season for Ayurveda. Choose a stay with a covered sit-out or balcony, so you can enjoy the rain on the lake. See best time to visit Alleppey.

Getting to where you stay

  • By air: the nearest airport is Kochi (Cochin) International. Most visitors continue by taxi, or by bus or train from Kochi.
  • By train: Alappuzha railway station is on the coastal line, and it is close to town and the beach.
  • By bus: KSRTC buses connect Alleppey with Kochi, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram.
  • To a lake island: your hosts meet you at a jetty and bring you across by boat. At Evaan’s Casa we arrange the pickup. Just tell us your arrival time.

Booking tips

  • Book direct where you can. You can ask questions on WhatsApp, and there is no booking-site commission.
  • Check exactly what is included: breakfast, meals, boat transfers, activities.
  • Check access. Is it on a road, or reached by boat? What time is the last boat?
  • Book early for December–January and for race week in August.
  • Read recent reviews, especially about cleanliness, food and the hosts.
