Is Alleppey Worth Visiting? An Honest Answer from a Local Host

Is Alleppey Worth Visiting? An Honest Answer from a Local Host

Last updated: September 2026

Is Alleppey worth visiting? We live here, so we are biased, but here is an honest answer: yes, if you want to see Kerala’s backwaters and slow down for a day or two. It is not the place for nightlife, big-ticket sights or shopping. It is the place for water, green paddy fields, canoe rides at sunrise, and home-cooked Kerala food. Here is what makes it special, who it suits, and how to avoid the common disappointments.

What Alleppey actually feels like

Picture a morning on the lake. Mist lifts off the paddy fields. A kingfisher dives. A canoe glides past carrying a woman to the market. Later the houseboats appear, the sun climbs, and everything slows down. In the evening the sky goes orange over Vembanad Lake and the lights of the boats flicker on. That rhythm is what people come for. If it appeals to you, Alleppey is absolutely worth it.

What makes Alleppey worth it

The backwaters

A maze of canals, rivers and lakes, including Vembanad, India’s longest lake. Nothing else in India looks quite like it.

Village life on the water

Children rowing to school, women washing clothes at the water’s edge, fishermen at dawn, ducks herded along the canals. You see it best from a small canoe.

Houseboats

Alleppey is the houseboat capital of Kerala. A night on board, with meals cooked by the crew, is a memorable experience.

Kuttanad

Rice paddies farmed below sea level behind earth embankments, which is rare anywhere in the world.

The Nehru Trophy boat race

Snake boats with over a hundred oarsmen race on Punnamada Lake, usually in August. It is one of Kerala’s great spectacles. See Nehru Trophy boat race stay.

The food

Karimeen (pearl spot fish), appam with stew, fish curry with coconut, and a full Kerala meal on a banana leaf.

Beaches too

Alappuzha Beach is in town, and quieter Marari Beach is a short drive north, so you can combine backwaters and sea.

Who will love Alleppey, and who might not

You’ll love it if you…You might not if you…

Enjoy village life and local foodDislike heat and humidity
Are travelling as a family or coupleNeed a lot of sightseeing to stay busy

Common disappointments, and how to avoid them

  • “The houseboat route was crowded.” The main routes get busy in peak season. Take a canoe into the narrow canals, or stay somewhere quieter, like a lake island.
  • “We didn’t have enough time.” Give it at least one night, ideally two. See how many days are enough for Alleppey.
  • “Our hotel was in the middle of town.” Stay on the water. See where to stay in Alleppey.
  • “It was too hot.” Go out early and late, rest at midday, and avoid the peak of summer if heat bothers you.
  • “It was more expensive than expected.” Houseboats and resorts push costs up, while homestays, canoes and local food keep them down. See our Alleppey trip cost guide.
