The Honest Truth About Staying Near the Punnamada Backwaters

The Honest Truth About Staying Near the Punnamada Backwaters

Last Updated: October 16, 2026

I walked down to the jetty just now, around six, because the light does something to the water at that hour that I still can’t describe properly after all these years. A vallam went past with that low diesel hum, and the smell of woodsmoke from a kitchen somewhere across the paddy drifted over. That’s my commute. Six minutes by boat, no road, and the noise of Alappuzha town falls away behind you like a door closing.

People search for resorts in punnamada alleppey and land on our page, or they find us some other way, and then they email me questions. Fair enough. But most of those questions are about facilities. What I actually want to tell them is simpler. This place suits certain people very well and it’s wrong for others, and I’d rather you know which one you are before you book a boat to my door.

So here’s the honest version. No brochure voice.

Who shouldn’t book (I mean this kindly)

If your ideal holiday involves a lobby, a menu with photographs, and someone in a uniform asking if everything is fine, we are not it. We’re a homestay on an island. The rooms are clean and simple, with lake views, fans, mosquito nets, hot water. Nothing more than that, and nothing less.

If you need to be somewhere at a fixed time every day, think hard. The boat runs on a sensible schedule, but the lake has opinions. In heavy monsoon the phone signal gets patchy and sometimes the wind decides things for us. That’s not a fault in the system. That is the system.

Also, and I say this with affection, if you cannot sit still for two hours with nothing to do, you will be bored by Tuesday.

Some guests disagree with me on all this, and that’s fair. But I’d rather lose a booking than host someone who spends three days wishing there was a television.

Who loves it here

The people who love it, love it quickly. A retired teacher from Pune has come back every January for years now. Same room, same chair on the veranda, same view of the paddy. She told me once that the sameness is the whole point, and I’ve thought about that line more than she probably intended.

An elderly couple spent their fortieth anniversary with us. They didn’t ask for decorations or a cake or anything. Both mornings they asked for tea on the veranda at six, and that was the entire celebration. Forty years, and what they wanted was two chairs and a hot glass each while the mist came off the water.

That’s the kind of guest this stretch of the lake is built for. Not built, exactly. It was already like this. We just put some rooms on it.

Karimeen pulled from the lake in December tastes different from June. Ask any fisherman on this water and you’ll lose twenty minutes happily, because they will argue about it. I’m biased, obviously, but I think December wins.

If you need to be busy, read this first

Look, there’s plenty to do. You can take a canoe through the narrow canals, watch coir being made, walk the paddy bunds at sunset, eat toddy-shop food that will ruin restaurant food for you. In August the Nehru Trophy snake boat race turns the whole lake loud for one weekend. A hundred men in a boat, water going everywhere, the bank shaking. Then Monday comes and it goes quiet again, like nothing happened.

But between those things, there is a lot of nothing. And the nothing is the product. That’s the part I can’t put in a list.

Most people skip this, but the best hour here is the one right after lunch, when the heat sits on the water and even the crows go quiet. If you can’t enjoy that hour, you’ll spend the rest of the day looking for a distraction that doesn’t exist out here.

Couples, families, and solo travellers

Couples do well. There’s a natural rhythm to the days that makes people talk to each other, which is rarer than it should be.

Families do well too, with one caveat. Young children need watching near the water. Constantly. It’s a lake, not a pool, and I say this to every parent at check-in, not to scare anyone but because it matters.

Solo travellers, honestly, might be the happiest of the lot. You get a veranda, a book, meals prepared at the homestay when you’re hungry, and nobody needing anything from you. One guest stayed eleven days and I think I heard her speak maybe forty words total. She seemed thrilled about it.

TravellerHonest fit
Couples wanting quietVery good
Families with small kidsGood, but watch the water
Solo travellersExcellent if you like your own company
Groups wanting nightlifePlease don’t
People who need strong wifiRisky in monsoon

One small thing I’ll admit: the generator hums. We keep it far from the rooms but on a still night you’ll hear it. And at dusk the mosquitoes arrive on schedule, which is why every bed has a net. That’s the deal. You get the lake, you also get the lake’s residents.

If you want to see the rooms and how the boat transfer works, it’s all on Evaan’s Casa. Have a look and then ask me anything.

Things guests usually ask me

How do we actually get to you?

You come to the jetty and we pick you up. Six minutes across the water, no road at the end of it. Bring only what you can carry comfortably, because there are steps and there is a boat, and neither of them cares about your suitcase wheels.

Is there air conditioning?

Fans and mosquito nets, and the lake breeze does most of the work. April and May get warm, I won’t pretend otherwise. Most people stop noticing by the second night.

What should we not miss?

The 6am tea on the veranda. I know that sounds like nothing. It isn’t.

Anyway. The light’s gone now and I should go help with dinner. Rain’s coming, I can smell it on the wind, and the tin roof will make a racket tonight. If that sounds like your kind of evening, you’ll fit in here just fine.

Write back if you’re wondering about anything. I’m usually near the jetty.
