Is Our Island Homestay Right For You? An Honest Answer

Is Our Island Homestay Right For You? An Honest Answer

Last Updated: October 07, 2026

The generator hums from six to nine every evening. You’ll hear it if your room faces the pump house, which two of them do. I keep meaning to build a better enclosure, and every year something else needs the money first — a new outboard, a roof patch after the monsoon. So the hum stays. And yet, every single time I cross the water at dusk and see the lamp on the veranda come on across the paddy, I think: I’d put up with a lot worse than a generator to live here. That’s the whole story of this place, really. A few small inconveniences, and a view that makes them feel like nothing.

Most people find us on a map and assume there’s a road. There isn’t. The boat ride in takes about six minutes, and it’s the first thing that tells you what kind of stay this is.

The honest fit test

Here’s what I tell people before they book. If you want to move fast, see ten things a day, and have somebody fetch you a cocktail at midnight, this is not your place. We are a small homestay on an island with no road access. The rooms are clean and simple. Fans, mosquito nets, hot water, lake views. That’s the offer, and I’m proud of it, but it isn’t a resort and I won’t pretend otherwise.

What you get instead is time that moves at the speed of the water. Mornings start with the first ferry from Punnamada crossing at about 6:15. You hear its engine before you see it — a low diesel throb rolling over the lake, then the long grey shape of it sliding past the palms. I’ve heard that sound my whole life. Guests sit up in bed for it. It’s a good alarm clock, honestly.

Some guests disagree, and that’s fair — a few have told me they found the quiet almost too quiet the first night. It happens. The mind isn’t used to it.

Couples, families, and solo travellers

Couples do best here. There’s not much to do but be together, which is either the point or the problem, depending on the couple. Long meals on the veranda, a book each, the water doing its slow business in front of you. I’ve watched marriages visibly relax over three days.

Families with younger kids tend to love it too, mostly because the kids find things to do that I never predict. One boy spent an entire afternoon watching a kingfisher work the same stretch of bank. His parents couldn’t get him inside for lunch.

Solo travellers, it depends. If you’re comfortable with your own company and you actually want to read that book you’ve been carrying around for a year, you’ll be fine. If you need a crowd, a bar, and people to talk to at 11 p.m., you’ll be climbing the walls by day two.

TravellerHonest fit
CouplesExcellent. Bring books, not plans.
Families with kidsVery good, though keep an eye on little ones near the water.
Solo travellersGreat if you like your own company. Tough if you don’t.
Party-seekers, resort-loversPlease don’t. You’ll be bored and I’ll feel bad.

A guest once asked our boatman to circle the island twice before landing. Twice. Just to take it in slowly from the water before setting foot on it. I stood on the jetty watching this little boat go round and round, and I understood completely.

That’s the kind of traveller this place was built for. Someone who wants to arrive gradually.

The meals are home-style Kerala food, cooked in the homestay kitchen — rice, fish from the morning delivery, thoran, sambar, and enough coconut to keep you honest. Mustard seeds hitting hot coconut oil is the sound of the whole house at noon. If you want a menu with forty items, we don’t have one. We have what the boats brought and what the kitchen decided, and it’s better that way.

One guest insisted on helping haul the morning fish delivery off the boat. I told him he didn’t have to. He was already rolling up his sleeves. He still emails me photos of that morning, a year on, standing there holding a bucket of karimeen like he’d won something.

A word on Kuttanad, and on being patient

Just south of us is Kuttanad, where the farms sit below sea level. We take it for granted — it’s just how the land is here, fields lower than the water beside them, kept dry by bunds and pumps and stubbornness. Visitors never take it for granted. They stop mid-sentence when they realise it. I have to remember that it’s genuinely strange, because I grew up inside it.

Which brings me to the things I’d rather tell you upfront. Mosquitoes at dusk, some of them enthusiastic. Phone signal that gets patchy in monsoon, sometimes for a day at a stretch. The generator, as mentioned. None of it is a dealbreaker, but you should arrive knowing.

If you want the fuller picture of how we run things — rooms, meals, the boat — it’s all on the Evaan’s Casa site. Read it before you decide. I mean that.

Things guests usually ask me

How do we actually get to you?

By boat, from the jetty we’ll send you directions to. Six minutes across. You leave your luggage with us at the landing and it comes over with you. No road, no taxi to the door, and that’s on purpose.

Is there Wi-Fi, and will it work?

There is, and mostly it works. In heavy monsoon it can drop for a while. If you need a reliable video call for work, tell me first and I’ll be straight with you about what to expect that week.

What’s the best time of year to come?

October to February is the easy answer — dry, cool mornings, good light. But the monsoon has its own pull: rain on the tin roof, the lake gone silver, everything green and loud. Some guests come back just for that.

I’m biased, obviously. I grew up on this water and I’ll probably die looking at it.

If any of this sounds like your kind of slow, write to me. Tell me what you’re actually hoping for from a few days here, and I’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit — including when we’re not. That’s a promise, not a sales pitch.
