Quick Summary: homestay near Punnamada
I remember the silence most. Before the first cough of a boat engine, before the call of the koel bird. Just the soft, wet sound of my grandfather’s oar dipping into Punnamada’s black water. He’d take me out in the pre-dawn dark, the mist sitting low on the lake. That’s the Punnamada I know. Not just the roaring stadium during the snake boat races, but the quiet, breathing lake that exists the other 364 days of the year.
That’s the Punnamada I want you to know, too.
When you search for a homestay near Punnamada, you’re probably picturing waking up to that famous view. You should. But here’s the thing most listings won’t tell you: the main road hugging the lake is loud. Day and night. Tour buses, autorickshaws, the general hum of Alappuzha town.
To be near Punnamada, truly near it, you need to be on it. Not beside it, looking at it from a busy street. You need to be where my family has been for generations—on the islands in its middle.
From our porch, the view isn’t framed by telephone wires. It’s uninterrupted water, right to the line of palms on the distant shore where the race boats line up. You hear the lake, not the traffic. That’s the difference.
People sometimes hesitate when I say we’re on an island. They think it’s complicated. Let me tell you, it’s the opposite.
The mainland is complicated. The island is simple.
Our boatman, Suku, meets you at the finishing point jetty. In six minutes, you’re with us. You leave the chaos of land behind. Your suitcase is on the veranda, and you’re holding a fresh coconut. Just like that.
This isn’t isolation. It’s immersion. The backwaters aren’t a sight you go see; they’re the air you breathe. Your morning chai comes with the sound of water lapping at our steps. The path to your room is lit by the moon reflecting off the canal, not a streetlamp. That short boat trip isn’t a hurdle; it’s the first and most important part of the experience. It resets you. Visit us at Evaan’s Casa and you’ll see what I mean. The journey is part of the home.
My mother measures her morning by the sizzle of mustard seeds in coconut oil. The smell of that tempering—curry leaves, dried chillies—winds its way through the house and out over the water. It’s the smell of home.
When you stay with us, you eat what we eat. The karimeen (pearl spot fish) is bought from Sebastian, who casts his net in these same waters. My mother marinates it in a paste of roasted spices, wraps it in a banana leaf, and cooks it over coals. That’s Karimeen Pollichathu. The taste is smoky, a little sharp from the kokum, and utterly of this place.
The appams are fluffy, the stew is gentle with coconut milk. The prawns are from the catch that morning. There’s no buffet line. Just food from our kitchen, served where you can watch the evening boats glide back to their moorings.
Bring a light sweater for the boat ride in the evening. The water breeze has a chill you don’t feel on land.
If you hear a low, rhythmic thumping sound early in the morning, that’s the chundan vallam—the snake boats—practicing. Walk to our western edge. You’ll see them, long and low, cutting through the mist, the oarsmen singing. It’s better than any paid tour.
Don’t just look at the water. Get in it. We have a traditional canoe. Paddle the narrow canals behind our house. You’ll see kingfishers, water lilies, and the quiet, daily life of these waterways.
Ask us anything. The best chai stall on the mainland? The quietest time to visit the old lighthouse? We know. We’re here.
So, that’s my invitation to you. Not just to a homestay, but to the Punnamada I grew up on. The quiet, watery world behind the postcard. It’s a place of woodsmoke mornings, of fish fresh from the lake, of profound peace found just six minutes by boat from the well-trodden path.
This is our home. And we’d be honoured to share a piece of it with you. Visit us at Evaan’s Casa, and let’s get Suku to bring you across the water.
I’ll be waiting on the jetty.
